7 1/2 x 10 sheet matted to 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 (mat measures 9 x 11 3/4). Color print from an original photograph of Dover Castle. An artistic rendering that also provides a good level of architectural detail. The print shows the northwestern approach of what has been called 'the Key to England'. Dover Castle is the largest English castle, and proved significant in military strategy from its construction in the twelfth century. It avoided damage during the English Civil War and was largely reconstructed during the Napoleonic Wars. It also played an important role in World War II, during which its tunnels were converted to air-raid shelters.
