Two 1868 Fortification Prints

Two prints singled matted (mat measures 11 3/4 x 15). Labeled Plate 2 and Plate 3, with the latter referencing 'Vol. 6' in the margin - likely removed from an encyclopedia. The first print illustrates two styles of fortification, the 'ancient' style popular in castles during the Middle Ages, and the modern star shaped style adapted for defense against canonry and other gunpowder artillery. The second shows dissected views of wall sections designed by numerous engineers, including the legendary Vauban.
