Johnston was a personal friend of William Pryor Letchworth. In 1858, Johnston and Letchworth were both members of the Nameless Club, a literary discussion group. Johnston was involved in the local poetry scene in Buffalo, NY, and somewhat of an activist regarding environmental conversation.
