xviii, 407 pp. "The history is divided into three parts: a narrative account of medical activities in the state, a biographical section, and an appendix containing some documentary material which might have burdened the text. The book touches on all of the more important events and people in early South Carolina medicine. No attempt has been made to include every locally recorded medical name. Those physicians who seem to have had an active part in more or less organized medical activities or achieved high local reputation have been included in the biographies, as have those who had some prominence in other fields or displayed some qualities of character which made them stand out above the others."
