Stockton's works were characterized by satire, much in the style of Mark Twain, though he also introduced science fiction elements into his writing. Several of his works were republished with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, which rekindled interest in his writing in the 1960s. One of these, The Griffin and the Minor Canon (included in the collection offered here), earned him a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award.
