Denton's DESCRIPTION provided English readers with their first close look at a colony which only a few years before had belonged to the Dutch. The author hoped to arouse interest in New York and to encourage English emigration to it. ...Denton preferred to discuss the more conventional, but still very valuable, resources of the country. The territory contained many fur-bearing animals, rich stands of timber, well-stocked streams, and fertile lands capable of a variety of agricultural uses.
