Denton's DESCRIPTION provided English readers with their first close look at a colony which only a few years before had belonged to the Dutch. The author hoped to arouse interest in New York and to encourage English emigration to it. ...Denton preferred to discuss the more conventional, but still very valuable, resources of the country. The territory contained many fur-bearing animals, rich stands of timber, well-stocked streams, and fertile lands capable of a variety of agricultural uses. The author explained the manner in which companies might be organized to settle the new lands, advised the emigrants what to bring with them for settlement in New York, and wrote in glowing terms of the economic opportunities which awaited."--Foreword
