"This is the first book which bears on its title-page the name 'New England,' which had up to this time been called North Virginia. In 1614 Smith sailed along the New England coast from Penobscot to Cape Cod in search of whales and mines of gold. The voyage was in most respects a failure, but it gave him an opportunity to write this tract, the general object of which is to show the advantages likely to accrue to adventurers in New England." (Church 369, in reference to the 1616 edition)
