A historical novel of World War I set in France, A Fable was written in 1954, and won Faulkner the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1955 (the first novel ever to win both). He spent over a decade on A Fable, and considered it his masterpiece when it was completed. Historically, it can be seen as a precursor to Joseph Heller's Catch-22.
