361, [4] pp. 8vo. An anti-racism allegory set in the post-Civil War United States, in which a former Union colonel travels in North Carolina and encounters the Ku Klux Klan. Tourgee was a Radical Republican, and an activist against racism both socially and institutionally - in his newspaper column A Bystander's Notes, he encouraged resistance to segregation laws, and was chosen as lead attorney for Homer Plessy in the famous case of Plessy v. Ferguson.
