Complete in five volumes. A history of America and its citizens by the 28th President of the United States. The work was originally published twelve years before he was elected to the office, while he was serving as President of Princeton University, and began as a series of articles written for Harper's magazine. The work is quite controversial for its apologetic position with regard to the formation and actions of the Ku Klux Klan, specifically Wilson's dismissal of lynchings, and is often used to assert that racial prejudice informed many of Wilson's social policies. Wilson's work is quoted in The Birth of a Nation, a film controversial for its negative portrayal of African-Americans. Wilson viewed the film at the White House (it was the first film to be viewed there), but later distanced himself from it.
