xii, 789; xiii, 1180 pp. 8vo. Full sheep, black morocco spine labels, gilt titles and rules. A collection of writings on obstetrics and gynecology by various authors, discussing diseases and disorders and their treatments, as well as normal physiology, a history of American gynecology, female anatomy, surgery, therapeutics (including the use of electricity), 'hystero-neuroses', etc. Illustrated with seven color plates and 562 wood engravings. The editor was a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Buffalo at the time of publication, and went on to become president of the American Gynecological Society and president of the Buffalo Academy of Medicine. He is likely remembered best, though, for operating on President William McKinley after the president was shot during the Pan American Exposition in 1901. McKinley died of his wounds, which caused critics to question Mann's decision to operate on site. McKinley's death was ultimately the result of gangrene, though, a complication for which antibiotic treatments did not exist at the time, so it is difficult to know whether Mann's actions made any difference in the outcome.
