He resided for a time as a fellow commoner at St John's College, Cambridge, but did not graduate. On 25 April 1796 he entered Lincoln's Inn; he was called to the bar on 16 November 1801, and afterwards practised as an equity draftsman. In 1815 he published A Treatise on the Principles and Practice of the High Court of Chancery, which reached a third edition in 1837.
