Black was one of the founders of modern dentistry in the United States, the father of operative dentistry, and the first to develop a standard for cavity preparations. Garrison-Morton 3689.2: "Black established a system of cavity preparation from which modern techniques have been derived. He constructed a "gnathodynamometer" with which the pressure exerted on the human tooth and therefore on the filling material could be measured. Through experimentation he established an ideal metal mixture which was stable and did not discolor. Publication of his results led to standardization of the alloys."
