Bonvalot was a French explorer who traveled to Tibet and central Asia, and wrote ten books based on his experiences. This work focuses on his 1889 expedition, which made him one of the first Europeans to visit the Tibetan plateau. Prince Henry of Orleans and his father, the Duke of Chartres, financed the trip. His planned route measured 9500 kilometers, but he was unable to enter Lhasa as he had planned. Despite this and other setbacks, he did reach his final destination of Hanoi in September of the following year.
