xi, [12]-400 pp. Red-orange cloth, gilt and black titles with black illustrations of totem pole, dogsled, and kayak on spine and front board. Engraved author portrait frontispiece, fold-out 1879 map of Alaska and adjoining region from the U.S. Coast Survey, engraved illustrations throughout, including images of whaling and local tribal peoples. OCLC notes two editions, both by Dodd, Mead & Company, dated 1880 and 1884, with the pagination of the former listed as 'ix, [13]-327' and the latter as '400 pp.' The difference appears to be simply that the plates were included in the pagination of the latter but not the former, though we have not compared copies of each version. Arctic Bibliography 7949: "Contains brief description of the physical features of Alaska; notes on population and tribes of Indians, on their religious beliefs, customs, and the status of women. Includes history of early missions, especially in southeast Alaska."
