First included as an appendix to one of Lord Kames's Sketches of the History of Man, and apparently printed separately here for the first time (according to advertisement by publisher preceding text). Thomas Reid was the founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense, an important figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, and a co-founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was also a critic of the work of David Hume, George Berkeley, John Locke, and Rene Descartes.
