Animal Farm is an allegorical novella by George Orwell, first published in England in 1945, which reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and through the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union. It shares some themes with Orwell's longer novel 1984, but expresses them more symbolically than overtly here, using various animals to represent (and criticize) the different factions within society.
