Army of Amateurs: General Benjamin F. Butler and the Army of the James, 1863-1865

The Civil War Army of the James spent most of its career under the ultimate command of Ben Butler, the quintessential amateur soldier, who was an excellent administrator but a poor field commander. It also suffered from a plethora of other commanders who could not get along with Butler or one another and from a lack of coordination with the Army of the Potomac.
