"The Atlas of Medieval and Modern History has been prepared by Professor Shepherd in response to a demand for a briefer atlas than the Historical Atlas, and one specifically adapted to the needs of students in survey courses devoted to modern European history. It is not intended as a substitute for the larger book, which covers the history of all countries from ancient to modern times and includes 226 separate maps (not including insets) as compared with the 80 maps in this volume. Even in the field of medieval and modern European history the larger work contains 69 maps omitted from this volume. Enough of the important maps have been retained, however, to make the briefer atlas adequate for the more elementary courses. A new index has been added, and a few minor changes have been made in the order of the maps to eliminate blank pages. The maps are identical with the corresponding maps of the larger atlas."--publisher's note
