Pine was a surveyor and civil engineer who surveyed the Niagara route to the west coast in 1865-67 on behalf of railroad and shipping magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt. Here he provides a firsthand account of the natural wonders and frontier settlements encountered during his trip. Includes chapters on the American buffalo, Native American tribes, railroads, mining, hot springs, Yosemite Valley, etc. He also mentions the Mormon settlements in Utah, which were established twenty years or less before his visit.
