378 pp. 8vo. Gray cloth binding, gilt titles with illustration on front board initialed FBS. A novel first serialized in Atlantic Monthly magazine from October 1897 to March 1898. It inspired a play and two silent films (1912 and 1920 - the latter was called Deep Waters). The author was also an award-winning painter, and an engineer, most notable in the latter capacity for building the foundation for the Statue of Liberty. Smith wrote the novel based on personal experiences building a lighthouse in Fishers Island, New York called Race Rock Light.
