viii, 343, [1], 15, [1] pp. Though the title and copyright page indicate this is an 1868 Trubner and Co. edition, the spine imprint states 'Free-Thought Publishing Company,' and bound in following the text is a 15-page catalog of works from Freethought Publishing dated 1879 and stating 'Two Hundred and Ninetieth Thousand.' Freethought Publishing was co-founded by Annie Besant and Charles Bradlaugh, and served as a secularist printer advocating for social reform. This was the first book to include the term 'comparative psychology' in its title, and includes commentary on free will. The author also wrote a work on serpent worship and other forms of totemism. Included following the text are appendices discussing the vocabulary and number systems of various cultures.
