255 pp. Translated into English from the original German by Leslie Franklin. Two chess masters discuss combination chess theories. From Richter's collection of stimulating combinations, Werner Golz has selected 313 examples, together with Richter's original commentaries, which touch upon a wide variety of tactical themes - pin, double attack, diversion, evasion, mating attacks and many others - to challenge players of all levels of ability. Also included are a number of Richter's instructive exercises and tests which the reader can attempt to solve, and verify by reference to the solutions at the back of the book. Paul Keres, for many years vice World Master, has written the introductory essay on Richter's role in the development and popularisation of chess, and presents specimens from Richter's own practice.
