Alexander Herzen promoted both socialism and individualism and argued that the full flowering of the individual could best be realized in a socialist order. He is remembered as a precursor of Russian socialism and one of the main precursors of agrarian populism. This volume comprises the first two parts of Herzen's autobiography, My Past and Thoughts, often considered one of the best examples of that genre in Russian literature.
