Philander Chase, in addition to his religious writings, was a traveler of what was then the western Frontier of the United States (Ohio, Illinois). McIlvaine served twice as Chaplain of the United States Senate. These writings partially pertain to the Theological Seminary in the Diocese of Ohio.
