This book's importance to us, as to the generation of 1831, when Cranford was published, and 1906, when it was first included in Everyman's Library, is the art, the taste, and the loving charity which Mrs. Gaskell here united. She was always a sincere and humane novelist; in Cranford, by writing with mature comprehension of what she had originally seen with a child's clear eyes and retentive memory, she produced something unique.
