Complete in four volumes. iv, 435; 448; 392; vi, 448 pp. Dark green cloth, gilt titles and rules. Includes a brief introductory note by Ralph Waldo Emerson, who would later collaborate with Carlyle on the work On Heroes, a work that strongly influenced his 1845 work Representative Men. Emerson was new to the world of publishing, having published his first essay Nature just two years before this work in 1836. He also edited this series of essays.
