45 pp. Self wrappers. A short work on paper money, counterfeiting/forgery, and bank note engraving by the founder of the New York Bank Note Company and the Continental Bank Note Company. Ormsby was an American engraver and inventor known for developing a pantographic engraving machine called the grammagraph. He also designed the five dollar note, and provided engraving plates for illustrations for The Columbian Magazine, a journal known for printing the stories of Edgar Allan Poe along with political and technological stories, from its first issue. He purchased controlling interest in the magazine in 1847. The technique used in his grammagraph was also used on the cylinders of revolvers made by Samuel Colt of Colt Firearms. Other inventions by Ormsby included a refined transfer press, medal-ruling machines and geometric lathes that took engraving from human hands to machinery.
