Regular price
$ 950.00
A collection of reproductions of Stradanus's (Jan van der Straet's) illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy, originally produced in the 16th century, with captioned tissue guards. Includes a preface on Stradanus and other artists who contributed illustrations to Dante's work by John Addington Symonds, and a foreword in which Guido Biagi asserts that Stradanus's work is superior to the illustrations created by Botticelli for the same purpose. Following these is a 'Topography and Chronography of the Dantesque Hell', comprised of an English translation opposite an Italian original, which appears to be an excerpt reproduced from a manuscript of Alessandro Vellutello Lucchese's La Comedia di Dante Alighieri con la nova esposizione. The majority of Stradanus's professional work was done for the Medici court after his arrival in Florence in 1550, and he contributed two paintings to the Studiolo of Francesco I.
