viii, 468, [4] pp. Panoramic fold-out engraving of Kabul and the surrounding area, engraved plates, including images of Kandahar, royal tombs, shrines, etc. A memoir by assistant chaplain on the Hon. East India Company's Bombay Establishment, who served under Major-General Sir William Nott, a British officer of the Bengal Army. Nott commanded a brigade during the First Afghan War (1838-1842), which began a struggle between Britain and Russia for control of central Asia. This work provides an account of Nott's reaction to the massacre of Elphinstone's army, and battles in the vicinity of Kabul and Kandahar. Nott's services were highly commended; he was immediately appointed Resident at Lucknow, was presented with a Sword of Honour, and was invested as a Knights Grand Cross of the GCB. This work was published the year of his return to Britain. Also included here are five sermons preached at the camp near Kabul. Chapters include: Sketch of the Dooraunee Empire; Lower Sinde; The Indus; Upper Sinde; The Bolan Pass; The Pisheen Valley and the Khojuk Pass; Kandahar; March from Kandahar to Ghuznee; March from Ghuznee to Kabul; March from Kabul to Peshawur; Conclusion; Sermon I: Preached at the Camp Near Kabul; The Captives Delivered; The Retrospect; Christmas; The Farewell.
