An extensive Spanish dictionary, published by the Royal Spanish Academy, one of two dozen national organizations who coordinate to promote linguistic regularization of the Spanish language in the various countries where it is spoken and written. This work, the original edition of which dates back to 1770, was published collaboratively, and is now commonly known as the DLE. The dictionary includes words in widespread common use, at least in a representative area of those where Spanish or Castilian is spoken, and also includes numerous archaisms and words now in disuse, to understand ancient Castilian literature.
