235, [1] pp. German text. A work by the German philosopher and theologian who studied under Hegel, and was a mentor and close friend of Karl Marx (though they would later disagree about Marx's socialist leanings). Bauer was notable as the first author to argue that Jesus Christ never existed, but was instead a literary figure. This work appears to discuss the rejection of organized religion in favor of the study of philosophy, which makes sense given that Bauer taught Rationalism during his time as a professor of theology at the University of Bonn. The clash between Bauer's views and the Prussian government's ultimately led to the revocation of his teaching license, in the very year of this work's publication.
