xli, [7], 432, [6]; [x], 331, [3] pp. 8vo. Leather spine and corners, marbled boards, gilt titles and rules, black morocco spine label, plain brown endpaper. Frontispiece portrait of Marcus Aurelius. The moral philosophy of the famous Stoic philosopher Epictetus, now called the Enchiridion, with Simplicius' commentary, together with Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, which had no formal title originally, and appeared as "things to one's self," "meditations," and similar variations. Both of these texts are foundational works in the school of Stoicism, which is a normative philosophy focused on morality and the virtue of living an ethical life. Epictetus works were influential on the thought of Aurelius, who cites Aurelius as a source. These editions of the works include biographical sketches of their respective authors, as well as additional material by Thomas Gataker.
