xxi, [3], 228, [1] pp. A satirical utopian novel which has been compared to Gulliver's Travels. This edition, modeled after the 1934 Limited Editions Club reissue of the 1901 revised edition, includes a special introduction by Aldous Huxley and woodcut illustrations by Rockwell Kent, as well as prefaces to the first, second, and revised editions - in one of these, Butler addresses public perception that Erewhon's success was owed to the contemporary publication of The Coming Race by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, another utopian novel. Both were originally published anonymously, and it was widely (and erroneously) assumed that Butler's work was a sequel to Bulwer-Lytton's. Butler explains in the preface that his novel was completed before the other was printed, and that the two bear no relation to one another.
