Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf famously carried on a love affair from 1925-1935 (a time during which many agree each produced their best work), and two characters in this novel (Viola and Leonard Anquetil) represent the Woolfs. Virginia in turn based the protagonist of her novel Orlando on Sackville-West.
