xxxvi, 469, [3] pp. Engraved 58 plates (two of which are large folding maps, one of which is a color two-page preliminary geological map, and one of which is a two-color, two-panel chart of geologic eras) and 143 illustrations in text. John Wesley Powell was the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey, and the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution. His efforts to explore and study the American West included the first government-sponsored journey through the Grand Canyon. This volume includes sections on geologic surveys of Yellowstone National Park and the Cascade Range, economic studies of Colorado and its mining districts, work on paleontology, and papers on topography, artesian wells, archaean formations, dinocerata, glaciers, and paleobotany.
