Designed as an improvement to the Erie Canal, connecting it to Lake Ontario, Cayuga Lake, and Seneca Lake, and the Hudson River to Lake Erie and Lake Champlain. The project was authorized in 1903, construction began in 1905, and building was completed in 1918.
