8, [44], 73, [13] pp. 4to. Italian text. A treatise on the use of cavalry by the Italian general and diplomat who fought for the Habsburgs in the Long War. Basta wrote several books on military command, but this is certainly his most important work, still recognized as the foundational work for best practices in regulation of light cavalry in Europe, and notable for the numerous engravings depicting various troop movements and formations. Basta was instrumental in the innovative use and increased importance of cavalry during his time under Alexander, the Duke of Parma. Many of the strategies put forth here seem to presage the development of cavalry's role in military actions at a time when warfare was changing drastically, due to the transition from swords and shields to firearms.
