xvi, 800 pp. 6 fold-out maps and plans, and plates containing 200 of the volume's nearly 2000 illustrations, follow the text. Original coral cloth, gilt titles, black and gilt decorations. An extensive history based on excavations Schliemann conducted at Hissarlik, which is now presumed to be the site of Troy. Schliemann's work lent credence to his belief that the classic epic poems of Homer and Virgil were based on historical events. The text recounts findings that indicate the presence of seven separate cities on the excavation site, and is illustrated with numerous wood engravings. The appendices, containing numerous essays related to Schliemann's research, and the index, are both enormous, together representing nearly one quarter of the text.
