xiii, 360 pp. Preface by W. Storrs Lee. The first significant book about the whaling industry. Experiences, journal entries, and sketches by Olmsted during a whaling voyage that took him across the Atlantic to the Azores, to the South American coast, the Sandwich Islands, Tahiti, across the South Pacific and around the Horn to Brazil, and back home again almost a year and one half later. This work is also an early source for the history of Hawaii (called The Sandwich Islands by Europeans at that point, so named by James Cook in 1778).
