He was a graduate of Harvard University's Medical College, contributor to various medical journals, and associate editor of the New England Medical Gazette, Department of Psychological Medicine. This work discusses treatments for numerous psychological disorders, including dementia, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, kleptomania, epilepsy, hypochondria, sleepwalking, sociopathy, psychopathy, etc. (though several of the names for these disorders are different than our modern usage).
