Rusby was a botanist and pharmacist, and a professor at Columbia University, who discovered a number of new plant species, and helped found the New York Botanical Garden. This institution encouraged research and plant exploration worldwide. Rusby also established the field of economic botany. The author discusses local cultures, indigenous flora and fauna, and natural features of the land. A short chapter is dedicated to the coca plant, cocaine, and their health effects. A list of scientific publications relating to the expedition, and an index, follow text.
