436, [12] pp. Burgundy cloth, gilt titles. Black-and-white frontispiece and plates by Andre Castaigne, best known as the original illustrator of The Phantom of the Opera, but also notable for his series of works related to Alexander the Great, as well as his images of the first modern Olympic Games (1896), which he produced for Scribner's Magazine. One of quite a few historical romances written by the popular American author who sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Lewtrah. The historian Francis Parkman spoke highly of the historical accuracy of her novels, and she co-founded the Western Association of Writers along with her friend James Whitcomb Riley and several other authors. This work was adapted into a stage play in 1902 by Otis Skinner, which starred Nanette Comstock.
