Compiled by the author of the first serious history of American surgery (see Garrison-Morton 5795), known as 'a surgical innovator and an outstanding author of numerous works which became classics.' (see Garrison-Morton 5607). 'In his day Gross was the most famous surgeon in the U.S.A.
