Admiral Doenitz was the senior submarine commander for Germany at the start of World War II; as the war continued, he became Grand Admiral and eventually Commander-in Chief of the Navy. In his will, Hitler designated Doenitz as his heir, and Doenitz spent 20 days as head of the Reich state.
