An account of the 1847 expedition of the Poinsett, during which Lynch was the first to determine that the Dead Sea was below sea level. John Y. Mason, who was then Secretary of the Navy, was one of 16 other men on the expedition. Lynch resigned from the U.S. Navy during the Civil War and joined first the Virginia Navy and then the Confederate States Navy as a captain.
