Includes accounts of voyages in the Antarctic Ocean and along Antarctica's coast, with landings at Wilkesland, Tonga, Fiji, the Hawaiian Islands, and the west coast of North America. Information gleaned from this expedition helped during the dispute with Great Britain over the Oregon Territory. Wilkes visited San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River as well. Illustrations depict the culture of Pacific islanders, Hawaiian volcanoes, Australia, Antarctica, the outpost at Astoria, Californios in Sacramento, Mt. Shasta, etc.
