x, 105 pp. Although the history of New Haven has been well recorded the contributions to it by New Haven's five nineteenth-century historians have seldom been examined and the scope of their efforts is not widely known. This book reviews in detail the major writings of Leonard Bacon, John Warner Barber, Edward R. Lambert, Edward E. Atwater, and Charles H. Levermore. Short biographies of each writer are included, as is a general survey of nineteenth-century American historiography. A final chapter briefly examines the continuation of New Haven history by twentieth-century authors.
