It was used as Australia's primary penal colony from 1800-1853. "Linus W. Miller, a twenty-two year old American lawyer who was transported to Van Diemen's Land as a state prisoner from Canada after becoming involved in the 1838 Canadian rebellion, arrived on the 'Canton' in Hobart Town on 17 January 1840. Returning to the US after his pardon, Miller wrote a book 'Notes of an Exile in Van Diemen's Land' in 1846." (Union Songs Research Archive). He dedicated the work to William H. Seward.
