An early edition of Nicolas Boileau-Despreaux's translation of Longinus' On the Sublime which popularized the work and influenced Edmund Burke's writings on the same topic (aesthetics and what constitutes good writing). Boileau's work with French poetry did for verse what Blaise Pascal's work did for French prose. This volume includes a preface and quite a bit of poetry preceding the Longinus text.
